The Scandinavian Style of Interior Design - 6 step system

The Scandinavian design has been popular for years, and now there are many new trends that are making this look even better.

Scandinavian Interior design gains it's popularity as it is practical, simple, and easy to maintain.

It also tends to be very neutral in color, which makes it perfect for any home. What is scandinavia ?-  Countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are defined as Scandiavia. As per Washington Post, it came to prominence in 1950s when a movement in Nordic design preached functionality and affordability over luxury.

It became mainstream and influenced design around the world. It gains it's popularity as it takes minimalism and functionality too seriously, making it aspirational.

Below are six steps to creating a Scandinavian interior design. Grab some popcorn and nachos while we take you on a visual ride.

1. Choose Neutral Colours

If you’re looking to decorate with a Scandinavian style, choose colors that are neutral.

This will help keep the room feeling calm and relaxing. You can use white as a base color, then add pops of color using accessories like pillows, rugs, and artwork. More about this later.

2. Add Texture with Warm Wood.

If you want to add texture to your home, consider using wood or stone as a feature.

These materials can make an otherwise bland room feel warm and inviting. Warm colours are anything that contain hues of yellows. Consider wood with yellow undertones to bring in the warmth.

3. Now, Cool down with a contrasting colour.

This is the least known interior designer trick to create stunning space i.e using colours opposite on the colour wheel.

By using a cooler tone, you will balance out the warmer tones, creating a perfect space that is Scandinavian by design

4. Create an Airy Space

An ideal Scandi design interiors embraces nature and a sense of openness. It starts with creating an airy space.

To create an airy space, start with a large window. Then, place furniture away from the wall so there’s plenty of open floor space. Finally, consider adding plants and art to fill up the empty spaces. Japandi Style design (which is Japanese and Scandi combined) uses plants to emphasize the emptiness. Similarly artwork can be used to create the minimalistic effect.

5. Focus on Functionality.

In addition to creating a comfortable environment, the Scandinavian style also focuses on function.

This means that everything should serve a purpose. For example, a dining table should be able to hold food and drinks, while a sofa should provide seating. A Scandi design kitchen should also serve it's purpose. So showcase the functionality by adding certain elements like in the pin above. The dining table is filled with elements that invite you to have a meal on the table.

6. Mix up Textures.

Texture allows us to create accents in our living space.

It also contributes to visual weight. By mixing up textures, we can create a personalised space with highlighted accents and a staged interior designer appearance. For example, consider mixing Boucle' with velvet or leather. Or add, some faux fur to an accent chair or your couch.
